I’ve had the opportunity to interview Robert Plant for VH1 Classic twice. The first time, in 2005, was one of my early assignments when Plant was releasing a box set of solo recordings he’d done after Zeppelin. I went to England for the first time, and we met at some sort of holistic center. It was like a spa, with a juice bar and New Age music playing in the background, and I had to sit on a bunch of pillows. Robert entered without an entourage and seemed like a very unassuming, regular guy. Then he asked if the crew and I would wait for him for an hour so he could get a massage—only Robert Plant could get away with that. When he emerged from the room, ready to be interviewed, he ordered a salad sandwich and cucumber sandwiches with tea. The food in England might be awful, but that was the first time I’d ever heard anyone order something like that! Salad sandwich?

After our interview in the spa, my producer suggested filming another segment at an outdoor market. Plant and I walked through rows of tents where people were selling things and talked about music like old friends. Surprisingly, he went largely unnoticed. A homeless man asked him for money, but otherwise, he wasn’t bothered. When I mentioned it to him, he said, “At the end of the day, I’m just an old hippy.”
